Why the Base Decides the Lifespan

Bozeman freeze and thaw is hard on roads. When fine subgrade soil pumps up into the aggregate, the base loses strength and the surface fails. A geotextile fabric between the two keeps them separated, so the crushed base stays clean and load-bearing through the seasons. Compacting the subgrade first, then the base, is what stops the ruts and soft spots that show up after the first wet spring on a Gallatin County lot.

Our Process

We strip topsoil and compact the native subgrade, roll out separation fabric where the soil calls for it, then place crushed aggregate base in lifts and compact each one to grade and cross-slope. The result drains, sheds water to the sides, and carries traffic without deforming. We size the base depth to how the drive will be used, from a home approach off Oak Street to a heavier ranch or job-site road.
